The Robert Wehrlin (1903-1964) of La Piscine
Until September 5, 2021
Swiss artist who trained with the expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Robert Wehrlin is very present in the collections of La Piscine that devoted a retrospective exhibition to him in 2012-2013. This new homage is made possible by the considerable third donation granted by the artist’s son in 2014 and which covers all of Wehrlin’s engraving work.
Benefiting from the teaching of André Lhote, and Jacques Villon in particular, he regularly exhibited works marked by the discovery of German Expressionism, Fauvism and Cubism, from 1925, at the Autumn Salon exhibition. After the war, he turned to abstraction and signed several illustrations as well as numerous monumental decorations for buildings in Switzerland.
Composed of more than 330 papers – engravings printed at the home of the artist on his press, and lithographs printed at the Atelier Clot –, this collection traces Robert Wehrlin’s artistic journey between figuration and abstraction and bears witness to the inventiveness of the artist and of his virtuoso engraving technique.
Relying on the demanding research work of a young etching specialist, Camille Belvèze, this event is part of a campaign to develop the collections of the museum that has been pursued for several years through the regular publication of collection catalogues and the online publication of its collections on the collection database.
