ALGERIA AND GUSTAVE GUILLAUMET (1840-1887)
9 MARCH – 2 JUNE 2019
La Piscine partnered with the museums of La Rochelle and Limoges to render homage to Gustave Guillaumet, a key figure in Orientalist painting of the 19th century. Thanks to important loans granted by public and private, French and international collections, this first ever and prestigious retrospective presents a true revelation of the naturalist painter hopelessly smitten by Algeria’s wide-open spaces and inhabitants at the beginning of the French colonial yoke.
In Roubaix, this exhibition is scheduled on the occasion of the Algerian Spring and affords the possibility of comparison with contemporary artists who present their views of their two countries, France and Algeria.
This exhibition is recognised of national interest by the Ministry of Culture / General Heritage Division / Museum Service of France. As such, it has received exceptional financial support from the State.
The exhibition has benefited from exceptional groups of loans from the Orsay Museum, confirming an essential partnership for La Piscine.
